Because if you aren’t, go get a 360 and do it now. I guess you could wait for the PS3 version to come out if you’re cheap. It’s the third best selling JRPG of this generation so far, but then again the top 2 are Lost Odyssey and Eternal Sonata.
Point is, if you’re reading the reviews, ignore the whining about performance and just install the game on your hard drive. The game is basically a mix of FFXII and Ogre Battle, where you issue general commands to your Unions (parties consisting of up to 5 members) like Attack, Attack with Mystic Arts, Attack with Combat Arts, Heal, Heal & Attack and a whole bunch of other context sensitive commands. The game is fairly complex, I mean the Strategy Guide is like 900 pages, looks like a phonebook and doesn’t even cover all the aspects of the game.
The main drawback to this game is due to the Unreal Engine 3. I’m not sure what the programmers intended, but there are times where there’s just so much going on that the game drops to like 10 fps (usually this is at the very beginning of a battle round when assets aren’t fully loaded yet, or in the middle of a critical hit where crazy effects are flying everywhere). It wasn’t this bad in Lost Odyssey and I guess I’ll just blame Squeenix for not being fully comfortable with the engine yet.
In any case, for a better idea of what it’s all about, you can always hit up the SA Games Forum Thread. It has pictures and shit.
Also, Emmy is totally awesome.

So this game is actually good? I saw a commercial for it and kinda thought for a moment that they were already advertising FFXIII, but then the Last Remnant logo came up.
If it’s anything like FFXII was, I’ll definitely need to check it out. I really wished that the Gambit system was more fleshed out to give more control. Is Last Remnant like that, or am I misinterpreting what you said about the similarities?
As long as the FPS droppage doesn’t stop actions from taking place (like it did in FFXII), it’s fine. Well, no, it’s not fine, but it’d at least be bearable.
One last thing: Does that Strategy Guide say: Last Remnant Perfect Bible? lol
I am enjoying the game so far, but I honestly haven’t played much FFXII at all. I can’t say much for comparison to the Gambit system, but for the most part you have a pretty good control over your Unions. If you tell them to attack with mystic arts, for example, you can see which characters in your Union will use which spell. If you use Attack and Heal, you’ll see which ones will Heal and which ones will keep attacking.
The FPS drop won’t prevent actions from taking place, but when it happens during a critical hit it actually makes timing your button presses easier. Actually I’m not sure if FPS lag is related to it, because sometimes the critical hit ring (think Lost Odyssey, really) slows down or speeds up. I think it’s just to keep you on your toes.
You should check out the SA thread if you want more details about it, I’m pretty sure the Games forum is public.
Also, no idea about the Strategy guide. :<
I was eager to get this game but after reading most reviews, I’ve lowered my expectations quite a bit. Most game reviewers gave it a between a fair and good review. I think we’ll have a great RPG dry out until FF13VS comes out(I’m expecting FF13 to flop too).
Honestly, the only game reviews I really look at now are the Gametrailer ones since they’re usually pretty good about being somewhat objective and actually showing how the gameplay works thanks to the video review format.
If you like JRPGs, you should definitely give Last Remnant a try.
As for FFXIII being a flop, I don’t see how FFXIII VS is somehow going to be good or bad when there hasn’t been any actual gameplay info released yet. The only thing people know about VS is that it exists and there are pictures of boring bishounen out there.
My expectations are based on the games I have played that were made by the teams(specially Toriyama and Nomura) behind FF13 and FF13VS.
I’ve played through it. The game is mostly side quests, I’ve done most of them so far. Not nearly enough in the main story. There are also ton of 100% optional guild tasks. I’m not sure, but I think I did at least half of them. There is also rare monster hunting, but it’s pretty pointless. Then there is customization where they want you to grind for items/rare items to make shit quality shit. I never once made any weapons. I customized a few to see what it would do, but they still sucked. The stuff I found on side quests was always so much better.
I see people complaining a lot of its difficulty, but that’s probably because they failed at strategy. I found the game rather easy, except for THE FALLEN (and the DLC bosses) Like hell I’m going to grind for hours on ends before the end of the game,
The battle system was nice though.
