Winter Preview Post: Sora o Kakeru Shoujo (Sora Kake Girl)

Man, studying really cuts into random tomfoolery time. In any case, this is the other Sunrise show that will be airing Winter 2008.

Generic Shounen Fanservice Mecha Show.

Remember how I said in the last post that there might be some potentially good shows next season? Well, unfortunately this one is going to be total shit. I mean, really, this is all that needs to be said:

Fluff sez: clicked thread expecting toki wo kakeru shoujo spinoff/sequel, found generic shounen fanservice shit, left horribly disappointed

However, since I wasted time looking this shit up out of curiousity, I must share it with the rest of you. A warning, perhaps.

The title is a play on Toki wo Kakeru Shoujo (The Girl who Leapt Through Time), except take out Time and put in Sky. Yes, this is about as lazy as you can possibly get when it comes to naming a new show. Let’s not judge too fast now, though, let’s take a look at the staff according to ANN.

Director: Masakazu Obara
Series Composition: Jukki Hanada
Original creator: Hajime Yatate
Original Character Design: Kazuyuki Yoshizumi
Character Design: Yousuke Kabashima
Mechanical design: Hiroyuki Ookawa (guest)
Producer: Naotake Furusato

So, ignoring Hajime Yatate considering it’s just a pseudonym for Sunrise, everyone except for the Series Compositor worked on Mai-HiME and/or Otome. If that wasn’t a red flag enough, the guy who didn’t, worked on Series Composition for Rozen Maiden, Yozakura Quartet, Sola and Idolmaster Xenoglossia as well as the scripts for He Is My Master and Kannazuki no Miko (amongst other horrible abortions of shows).

If you haven’t figured out yet, this isn’t my kind of thing. Mai-HiME was great until the very end when they were like “WELP, THE DRAMA WAS FUN, TIME TO REBOOT AND MAKE EVERYONE HAPPY AGAIN”. Mai-Otome was just awful. I’m sure many people would disagree, but they’re probably awful people anyway so their opinions are null and void.

Here is the character listing that I couldn’t be bothered to save the images for and rehost. In any case, since I keep track of seiyuu for shits and giggles, the main, pink-haired character is voiced by Mako. Who that is? I have no idea. Aya Endo (Sheryl Nome, Kinue Crossroad, Miyuki from Lucky Star off the top of my head) voices the angry-looking, green-haired Shizuru clone and Yui Makino (Sakura from Tsubasa Chronicles, not like I watch that but I think someone else might) is the kid with the stupid hat.

Yukari Tamura (Nanoha et al., you should remember her from the other Winter post) plays the blonde girl who is described as “hard”. Yeah okay. Anyways, Yukana is apparently the “soft” mature older blue-haired girl under her in the character list. The only other notable stuff there is Ai Nonaka playing the role of some robot… thing… that is related to the green haired girl and… I don’t even know.

Really the only important thing is at the bottom of the page there’s a dumb looking character with a seiyuu named COON. Yeah.

At least it has mechs that look like bees. GN Drive powered bees.

Bun bun bun bun bun kiroii vacance yo~

The OP is by Ali Project, so instant garbage unless you’re into that kind of thing, then it’s instant heaven. The ED is sung by the seiyuu so it’ll probably be awful.

All signs point to this show being shit. However, if they end up having sweet choreographed fight scenes, the mecha fan in me will force me to watch it anyway.

Sometimes I hate that fan.

    Eej’s hidden hate for Ali Project: Blasphemy using the name of Prince Ali for the band’s own benefit.

    Sudden hate? Everyone knows Ali Project just play the same shit song every time someone mistakenly hires them to make an OP theme.
    And Xenoglossia was good! Meteor-punching, orbital cannons and LOVE IS OVER ;_;

  3. @Lawl
    No, I just don’t like Ali Project songs at all.

    @notaname
    I’ve never seen Xenoglossia but this is probably the first time I’ve ever heard anything good about it aside from, say, /m/ trolling threads.

    do I spy a colony drop on the first image or is that just some mech Σ(゚Д゚;o)

  5. It looks like a colony drop… and it IS Sunrise…

    Man I don’t want to watch this show but it’s throwing these random possibly good things at me.

    I know what you mean, it’s Xenoglossia all over again. Xenoglossia more or less took that “Generic Shounen Fanservice Mecha Show” designation to it’s logical conclusion if you’re wondering what it was all about.

    In the end there will probably be something in this one worth seeing in at least a handful of episodes, but I too bet that it’s ultimately going to be exactly what it looks like from the teaser image. It’s the type of show that screams average Otaku Cash In Series and I resent it for not only that, but because I’m still waiting on my Gaogaigar Project Z OVA that I was promised a few years back.

    I swear this one is some kind of experiment though, especially after the Ali Project announcement. Ali Project is, and I swear by this now, the kind of group you hire to make an opening (not so much an ending) if you want to warn people that a show is going to be mediocore, kind of like appending “The Revenge” to the end of a movie title. That’s going to be their legacy by the time they finally decide to hang it up.
